@City

Automated vehicles and intelligent traffic in the city

Problem statement

Due to its complex traffic volume, the city poses a particular challenge for automated driving. Compared to well-structured environments, such as highways, considerably more precise recognition is required here. A wide variety of intersections, traffic circles, etc. make situational understanding even more difficult. Reliable situational awareness, on the other hand, is the basis for all automated driving functions in the city.

Project objective

The aim of @City is to enable automated driving in cities as well. Automated vehicles and intelligent traffic are seen as the central elements for the safe, efficient and stress-free urban traffic of the future. Automated vehicles should not only provide the driver with the highest possible level of support, but also improve the interaction between vehicle and driver, but also between vehicle and pedestrian or cyclist.

Realization

The project aims to develop powerful, robust algorithms for environment detection and situation understanding, precise digital mapping and self-localization, automation design, and optimal driver involvement. Based on this, new automated driving functions for the city are designed that support the driver even in the complex urban environment with its high information density and at the same time very short reaction times. These automated driving functions will be demonstrated in exemplary pilot applications.

Tasks 3D Mapping Solutions

The main task of 3D Mapping Solutions is the creation of highly accurate digital HD maps as reference maps for the project partners, which acts as a basis for the support of the sensor technology for environment detection. This concerns the definition of the test areas, as well as selection of the contents of the base map.

In total, 3D Mapping Solutions generates HD maps with inner-city character for 8 partners of the project @CITY and @CITY-AF. In the process, a route of 137 km with a total of 559 intersections is processed in 8 German cities. The routes are in the following locations:

@City

  • Dusseldorf: 15,0 km Track, 100 Intersections
  • Frankfurt: 18,0 km Track, 73 Intersections
  • Ingolstadt: 19,0 km Track, 83 Intersections
  • Kronach: 17,0 km Track, 67 Intersections
  • Ulm: 10,0 km Track, 34 Intersections
  • Wuppertal: 17,0 km Track, 51 Intersections

@City - AF

  • Braunschweig: 20,5 km Track, 68 Intersections
  • Munich: 20,7 km Track, 83 Intersections

To capture the environment and model it as a digital base map, the necessary content must be clarified. These contents are, for example, traffic-related, such as traffic lights and traffic signs. But also objects like street lamps, delineators or other poles are crucial contents of a base map. 3D Mapping Solutions handed out a so-called object type catalog to the project partners. This catalog lists all objects of traffic relevance and components of the environment that can later be found in the digital base map and used, for example, for self-localization.
