UPSIM

Unleash Potentials in Simulation

Problem statement

Today, simulation is used for design space exploration, virtual testing, or predictive maintenance to support early-stage product decisions. Most importantly, real-world testing is ultimately used to ensure product quality and certification.

Project objective

The goal of UPSIM is to enable companies to collaborate on simulations in a safe, repeatable, reliable and robust manner and to implement simulations in a credible digital twin as a strategic capability to become a key enabler of quality, cost, time-to-market and overall competitiveness.

Realization

The UPSIM consortium has identified credibility in system modeling and simulation as key to return on investment, with modeling and simulation quality assured by processes and assessment models compared to software development.

The UPSIM project is taking a three-step solution approach to ensure credibility in modeling and simulation and unlock economic benefits across the board.

  • Definition of "credibility": The first step is to clarify the simulation objectives and relevant stakeholders to determine the required modeling and simulation quality according to decision and test criticality. There is a strict need for openly accessible reference processes and Digital Twin Readiness Levels provided by UPSIM.
  • Development of credible digital twins: Once the goals are clarified, a traceable and collaborative digital development of the digital twin via continuous testing procedures that provide a continuous of modeling and simulation maturity based on massive automation for data analysis analysis, inference, and machine learning.
  • Optimizing usability: Digital signatures ensure unique identification and traceability of development artifacts to encapsulate complex simulations (SimApps) for use by non-experts. This ultimately leads to a more competitive modeling and simulation market in the long run.

Tasks 3D Mapping Solutions

For the UPSIM project we provide reference information for advanced driver assistance systems as well as basic data for driving simulator applications. The project builds on extensive preliminary work in terms of defining the appropriate objects and their attributes for describing road geometry and road objects as well as their logical relationships, using both road data formats from the surveying domain (road database, road planning, as-built planning, routing) and specific formats from the automotive industry and driving simulation (e.g. OpenDRIVE, Road5 IPG CarMaker). The project fits seamlessly into the development activities of 3D Mapping Solutions. Especially the standardization of formats, the description of map attributes and the assurance of map quality are real future topics for 3D Mapping Solutions.
